FCC INSPECTION
If I sound a little rattled today, it's because we just had a random FCC inspection. First of all, the FCC is not looking for dirty words on the air to fine people. That's a small part of their operation. They are mostly concerned with EAS (Emergency Alert System) requirements and other technical things. All of these items are on the shoulders of the operators--and the operators are the people like me and Artie Fufkin.
If there is an EAS alert, we need to know how to activate it.
Anyhow, to keep a long story short, the FCC came to the station, checked us out, and were pleased with our compliance. I knew we were in good shape all along, but you still get nervous when a surprise inspection happens. It's like getting audited by the IRS. The FCC officers are quite nice and personable as well. They are more interested in making sure we're doing what they require and helping us get there if we're not. They don't go looking for reasons to fine broadcasters.
Visiting with them was quite educational and productive. I know this sounds like I'm kissing ass a little, but I'm not. They're completely reasonable when it comes to technical inspections.
Big sigh of relief.
A couple of years ago, they inspected us and made Artie answer some questions and he passed with flying colors. I think he even offered to carry them to their car afterwards.
